Newsletter – February 5th, 2024

Dear members,
Dear colleagues,

I would like to draw your attention to the upcoming FENS Forum in Vienna, to planned changes to the Swiss legislation on animal experiments and to a change in the evaluation of SSN Travel Fellowships.

FENS Forum 2024 in Vienna

The bi-annual meeting of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS Forum) will be held June 25-29, 2024, in Vienna. Early registration and abstract submission will close on February 9th, 2024. Members of the SSN benefit from reduced registration fees. If you are planning to attend the FENS Forum, but are not an SSN member yet, please be aware that it may take up to one business day for your SSN membership application to be approved.

Legislation on animal experiments

Last year, the SSN submitted a statement on proposed changes to the ethical guidelines for animal experiments put forward by the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMW/ASSM). In response to the critical feedback submitted by many stakeholders from the Swiss scientific community, SAMW/ASSM has decided to completely rework the proposed changes.

The SSN plans to again submit a statement in the currently ongoing public consultation on planned changes to the Swiss legislation on animal experiments. All the relevant documents are publicly available either in German or French. We encourage all of you to review the planned changes for their potential impact on your research, and to contribute feedback through your institution, institute, or as an individual. The deadline for submissions is March 15, 2024.

SSN Travel Fellowships

The next call for SSN Travel Fellowships will close on March 1st, 2024. Student and postdoc members of the SSN are eligible to apply. The applications are evaluated by a committee of 3 SSN council members and ranked based on quality criteria. In addition, to select between applications of similar quality, the SSN council recently decided to favor applicants that have been SSN members for longer. This new rule provides a means for us to acknowledge the long running support from our members.

Warm regards,

Signature SSN President (V. Mante)
